Nigeria’s football community is in mourning following the death of former Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Peter Rufai, popularly known as Dodomayana.

TJ News Nigeria reports that Rufai passed away on Thursday after a prolonged battle with illness. He was 61 years old.

One of Nigeria’s Finest Goalkeepers

Widely regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in Nigeria’s football history, Rufai had a career spanning over two decades, featuring in top leagues across Europe. He played professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, earning praise for his consistency and leadership on the field.

Rufai was also a mainstay in Nigeria’s national team, making appearances at two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s golden generation of the 1990s and was known for his composure, athleticism, and commanding presence in goal.

A Day of Double Tragedy in World Football

TJ News Nigeria learnt that Rufai’s passing occurred on the same day that Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota reportedly died in a fatal car crash in Spain, alongside his brother. While both deaths are unrelated, the football world has been struck by back-to-back losses of two respected players from different generations.

Tributes Pour In

Though official statements from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and former teammates are yet to be released, tributes have started pouring in from fans, clubs, and football organizations across Nigeria and beyond. Many have described Rufai as a patriot, mentor, and football legend whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
