A new judge assigned to the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has set a fresh date for the resumption of his trial.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed Friday, March 21, 2025, for the continuation of Kanu’s terrorism trial, following the transfer of the case file to him.
The reassignment was confirmed on Wednesday, March 12, after the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, officially transferred the case to Omotosho.
Background of Kanu’s Trial
Nnamdi Kanu is facing a seven-count charge filed against him by the Federal Government, with the Department of State Services (DSS) leading the prosecution. The charges stem from his activities as the leader of IPOB, which the Nigerian government has designated as a terrorist organization.
Previously, Kanu’s trial was handled by Justice Binta Nyako, but he and his legal team accused her of bias, leading to a legal standoff.
Why Was the Case Reassigned?
- Kanu alleged that Justice Nyako was unfair in handling his case and requested that a new judge be appointed.
- He refused to appear before Justice Nyako, leading to an indefinite adjournment of the trial.
- He also petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, asking her to intervene and ensure that his case was reassigned.
- Initially, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court returned the case to Nyako, insisting that Kanu’s legal team must formally apply for her recusal before a change could be made.
Following prolonged legal debates, the case was eventually transferred to Justice James Omotosho, who has now set a new date for the trial’s continuation.
What’s Next for Nnamdi Kanu?
With the trial set to resume on March 21, all eyes will be on:
- Kanu’s legal team: Will they challenge any aspect of the new trial proceedings?
- The government’s approach: Will there be any changes in prosecution strategy?
- Public and political reactions: Given the sensitivity of the case, how will pro-Biafra supporters respond?
