The Nigerian Army has declared a nationwide three-day mourning period in honour of 17 soldiers who were brutally killed during an operation in Kwana Dutse, a community in Niger State’s Mariga Local Government Area.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that the soldiers were attacked while responding to a distress call in the troubled region, resulting in the loss of highly trained and gallant personnel.

According to an official statement released on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, the mourning period will last from June 25 to June 27. All Nigerian Army flags across formations and units are to be flown at half-mast during this period, in line with the military’s protocols for honouring fallen troops.

The Army described the 17 soldiers as “brave and courageous men” who sacrificed their lives while serving the nation. Their deaths have been described as “senseless and painful,” further underscoring the volatile security challenges in some parts of the country.
