Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has clarified the reason behind his absence at the burial ceremony of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Daura, Katsina State.

TJ News Nigeria reports that Obi’s absence at the high-profile event drew attention and criticism from some Nigerians, who questioned why a former presidential contender would not attend such a significant national event.

Addressing the matter during a televised interview with Arise News on Wednesday, Obi disclosed that his absence was due to logistical challenges, particularly issues related to flight availability and airport restrictions in Katsina State.

Katsina Airport Was Closed – Obi

“It was difficult to come yesterday (Tuesday) because there was no flight,” Obi stated during the interview. “Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed, because there was a lot of dignitaries.”

He added that despite missing the formal ceremony, he made it a priority to visit Daura the following day to pay his respects and offer condolences to the bereaved family.

“Mourning continues until tomorrow. So, whoever comes today and tomorrow, is still part of the mourning,” he said.

Obi Visits Buhari’s Family in Daura

Obi was seen in Daura on Wednesday, July 16, where he met with members of Buhari’s family. He expressed his sympathies and paid tribute to the late statesman, who served Nigeria both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that Obi’s visit was well-received by local leaders and family members, who appreciated his gesture, even though he could not attend the earlier funeral rites.

Buhari’s Burial Attracted Top Dignitaries

The burial of former President Buhari was attended by a wide range of Nigerian political elites, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former heads of state, governors, federal lawmakers, and foreign dignitaries. The high turnout reportedly led to temporary closure of airspace and restricted movements in Katsina, complicating access for late arrivals.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) had earlier issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) restricting flights within the region due to security protocols and the presence of top officials.

Reactions Trail Obi’s Clarification

Following Obi’s explanation, mixed reactions have trailed the development on social media. While some critics have remained unsatisfied with his absence, others praised him for eventually making the trip to personally condole with the Buhari family.

A political analyst, Mallam Musa Bello, speaking with TJ News Nigeria, noted:

“Whether Obi attended on Tuesday or Wednesday, what matters is that he honoured the late President in person. That shows leadership and respect.”

Others urged politicians and the media to focus more on the contributions and legacy of the deceased leader rather than who attended or missed the burial ceremony.

A Legacy Remembered

The late President Muhammadu Buhari passed away at the age of 82. He was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites in his hometown of Daura.
