The Nigeria Police Force has successfully extradited a high-profile financial fraud suspect, Abubakar Muhammed, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Nigeria, following his arrest in Dubai.

Muhammed, who had been declared wanted since 2023, was extradited to Nigeria on Friday, May 23, 2025, after his arrest in Dubai on April 15. The extradition marks a significant milestone in the country’s fight against transnational financial crimes.

Background of the Case

According to police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, Muhammed was placed under an INTERPOL Red Notice following allegations that he defrauded an Abuja-based international businessman of $307,500. The suspect allegedly posed as a shipping agent, promising to ship luxury vehicles from the UAE to Nigeria.

Adejobi disclosed in a press statement on Saturday, May 24, that the operation was a coordinated effort between INTERPOL NCB Abuja, INTERPOL Abu Dhabi, Dubai Police, and the Nigerian Consulate General in Dubai.

Modus Operandi of the Fraud

Police investigations revealed that Muhammed used a third-party bank account at First City Monument Bank (FCMB), registered to one Anas Usaini from Kano, to receive the fraudulent funds.

Key Facts:

  • Victim: Abuja-based international businessman
  • Amount Defrauded: $307,500
  • False Claim: Shipment of 10 high-end luxury vehicles
  • Method: Used fake shipping documents (bill of lading)
  • Account Used: Belonged to Anas Usaini (Kano resident)
  • Destination of Funds: Laundered through operations in Dubai

The suspect allegedly convinced the businessman of his legitimacy by presenting himself as a licensed shipping agent. After gaining his trust, Muhammed obtained full payment for the shipping of ten luxury vehicles. He later vanished after sending forged shipping documents, leaving the victim unable to contact him.

Cross-Border Collaboration

Adejobi noted that the success of the extradition underscores the strength of international law enforcement collaboration. “This case highlights the commitment of Nigerian law enforcement and international partners to ensure that fugitives are brought to justice, regardless of jurisdiction,” he said.

Prosecution and Legal Proceedings

The extradited suspect is expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The prosecution will be led by relevant law enforcement and legal authorities tasked with handling high-profile financial crimes.

“This development represents a landmark success in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on international fraud rings and enforce accountability for white-collar criminals,” Adejobi added.

Significance in the Fight Against Financial Crime

This extradition serves as a warning to other fugitives engaged in cross-border fraud and money laundering. It reaffirms the Nigerian government’s stance on international cooperation in the fight against financial crimes.

The Interpol Red Notice issuance, arrest in Dubai, and swift extradition illustrate the effectiveness of bilateral partnerships between Nigeria and the UAE.

Public Reaction and Legal Implications

The case is expected to attract national attention due to the scale of the fraud and the high-profile nature of the operation. Legal analysts suggest that if convicted, Muhammed could face severe penalties under Nigeria’s Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act and related provisions of the Criminal Code Act.
