Auchi Polytechnic Lecturer Assault: Authorities Urged to Investigate Viral Mob Justice Incident

A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a man—reportedly a lecturer at Auchi Polytechnic—being physically assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals in Auchi, Edo State. The incident has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for a full police investigation and condemning the use of mob justice.

TJ News Nigeria obtained the viral footage, which captures the man in a visibly distressed state, surrounded by several individuals who appear to be engaging in acts of intimidation and assault. The attackers alleged that the man was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a married woman—an unverified claim that has not been confirmed by the police or any official authority.

Online Reactions and Condemnation of Jungle Justice

The footage has sparked public concern over the prevalence of jungle justice and the increasing trend of individuals taking the law into their own hands. On social media, many Nigerians have condemned the attack, describing it as unlawful and dehumanizing.

“In as much as what the man did was very wrong, what they did to that man was also very wrong and must be condemned by every right-thinking person,” one user wrote.

Another user, Stephen Emmanuel (@StepbySteps101), stated:

“You have no such right to take laws into your hands. There’s no room for jungle justice in the constitution, so why won’t you be jailed for this?”

Others also criticized those in the background of the video who appeared to be encouraging the act, calling their behavior contradictory to the ideals of justice and national progress.

“The way Nigerians are cheering for the people dehumanizing this man really shows how shallow-minded they are. These are the same people who want a better country while neglecting the law,” one user commented.

Alleged Student Describes Incident as a Set-Up

A Twitter user identified as Ak Akomaye (@AkomayeAk), who claims to be one of the man’s students, has alleged that the attack may have been premeditated.

“This man is my lecturer. He is a nice and intelligent person. We were all surprised in the department when the news broke out. It all looked like a set-up. He teaches us Sampling Technique and is also good at analyzing data. The police should do proper investigation into the issue,” the post read.

Authorities Urged to Intervene

As of the time of this report, law enforcement agencies have not released an official statement regarding the incident. However, concerned citizens and students are calling on the police to take swift action to identify and prosecute those responsible for the assault.

 

Legal experts have also reiterated that no individual or group has the right to take laws into their hands, regardless of the alleged offence. Human rights advocates are urging authorities to treat this as a case of assault, public humiliation, and possible criminal conspiracy.
