Tunde Bakare Urges President Tinubu to Respect Separation of Powers
Lagos, Nigeria – Prominent cleric and former presidential aspirant, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has raised concerns over what he described as the weakening of Nigeria’s democratic institutions under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his latest State of the Nation Address, delivered on Sunday at the Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos, Bakare criticized the relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government, warning that the country is at risk of institutional erosion.
“Stop Playing God,” Bakare Warns Tinubu
Speaking directly to the President, Bakare expressed dismay at what he termed an overbearing influence of the executive on the National Assembly, urging Tinubu to “stop playing God.”

“To the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, under whose brand of politics the institution of legislative oversight is collapsing, and our democracy is faced with an existential threat, I say: Mr. President, Nigeria is too delicate for this kind of politics,” Bakare declared.
He further stated, “No man is wise enough nor good enough to be trusted with unlimited power. Please, stop playing God.”
Allegations of Legislative Overreach and Executive Interference
Bakare alleged that the National Assembly, particularly under its current leadership, has become an extension of the presidency, compromising its constitutional mandate to provide checks and balances.
He cited recent controversial legislative actions, including the approval of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as examples of what he called “legislative rascality” and a departure from democratic norms.
“This National Assembly, the Tenth, has by its unconstitutional endorsement of the President’s abuse of power proven to be the most spineless in our recent history,” he stated. “Through its actions and inactions, the legislature has effectively become the 48th member of the President’s cabinet.”
Calls for Democratic Reforms and National Reflection
Bakare’s remarks have stirred renewed conversation on the importance of institutional independence and transparent governance in Nigeria. Civil society groups and political analysts are weighing in, with many echoing concerns about separation of powers, legislative autonomy, and the rule of law.
The pastor, known for his history of civic activism and social commentary, emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize national interest over political expediency. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and committed to defending the core principles of democracy.
Public Reactions and National Implications
The address has gone viral across social media platforms, sparking debates among political observers, supporters of the ruling party, and opposition figures. While some view Bakare’s comments as bold and necessary, others argue that his criticisms could deepen political tensions.
Still, the message has resonated with many citizens concerned about governance accountability and democratic stability in the country.
