Benue Teaching Hospital Overwhelmed, Begs for Blood Donation After Deadly Herdsmen Attack in Makurdi

The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has issued an urgent appeal to Nigerians for blood donations to save the lives of victims injured in a fresh herdsmen attack on communities in the state capital.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that heavily armed assailants suspected to be Fulani herdsmen launched coordinated attacks on Mtsewnem and Akondutyough villages in the North Bank axis of Makurdi Local Government Area in the early hours of Thursday.

Several persons were reportedly killed in the brutal assault, while many others sustained severe injuries and are now receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.

Injured Victims in Critical Condition

According to a statement released by Tsenzughul Moses, Acting Head of Public Relations and Protocol Department of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, many of the injured victims remain in critical condition and require immediate blood transfusions to survive.

The hospital stressed that time is of the essence in saving the lives of the injured.

“Following the recent tragic Fulani herdsmen attack in the early hours of today, many survivors have been rushed to Benue State University Teaching Hospital for treatment. These victims are in critical need of blood to survive,” the statement read.

Hospital Issues Public Appeal for Blood Donation

The management of BSUTH appealed passionately to members of the public, residents of Makurdi, and neighboring communities to visit the hospital’s blood bank to make donations.

“We are urgently calling on the public to donate blood and help save lives,” the statement continued.

“Please proceed immediately to the Haematology Department, Blood Bank Unit at Benue State University Teaching Hospital to make your donation.

“Your contribution can make the difference between life and death. Thank you for your compassion and swift response.”

Ongoing Attacks in Benue

Benue State has been one of the epicenters of violent clashes between herdsmen and farming communities in recent years. The renewed attacks in Makurdi underscore the persistent security challenges faced by residents of the state.

Local authorities have yet to release the official casualty figures from the attack, but sources within the affected communities confirmed that several lives were lost, with properties destroyed.

Security operatives have reportedly been deployed to the affected areas to prevent further attacks and maintain order.
