Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the death of former Super Eagles coach and captain, Christian Chukwu, at the age of 74. The legendary figure passed away earlier today after a prolonged battle with illness.
Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman” due to his commanding presence on and off the pitch, was one of Nigeria’s most revered football personalities. Sources close to the family confirmed that he had been battling an undisclosed illness for some time before his demise.
Cause of Death Revealed
Family sources confirm Chukwu succumbed to prostate cancer and kidney-related complications after years of treatment. His health had significantly declined in recent months, requiring specialized medical care.

His death comes three years after false reports of his passing circulated in 2021, which he debunked during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4 of that year. At the time, an emotional Chukwu expressed frustration over the rumors, stating:
“I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story.”
A Storied Career in Football
Chukwu’s legacy in Nigerian football is unparalleled. As a player, he captained the Green Eagles (now Super Eagles) to Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph in 1980. His leadership and defensive prowess earned him widespread acclaim.
After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching, leading the Super Eagles in the early 2000s. He also managed clubs such as Enugu Rangers and Kenya’s national team, leaving an indelible mark on African football.
Tributes Pour In
The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief from former teammates, players, and football administrators. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) described him as “a true legend whose contributions to Nigerian football will never be forgotten.”
Former Super Eagles striker, Segun Odegbami, tweeted: “Chairman was not just a coach or captain; he was a father figure to many of us. Nigerian football has lost a giant.”
Funeral Arrangements
The family is expected to release an official statement regarding funeral arrangements in the coming days.
Final Whistle for a Legend
Christian Chukwu’s death marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, but his legacy as a player, leader, and mentor will live on forever.
