Speaking during the interview, Hanan Buhari, fondly known as Aisha Hanan, said the loss of their father feels like losing a vital part of her body.

“What I will miss most about him is his sense of humour. I look up to him as a part of me,” she said.

She added:

“We have nothing to say to those who forgave him except thank you and thank God.”

“He Taught Us Never to Take What Isn’t Ours”

Hadiza Muhammadu Buhari, also known as Nana, shared a touching personal story about her father’s teachings. Recalling an experience from her childhood, she narrated how he taught them financial accountability and integrity.

“He once gave us money to buy textbooks. I had some change left and used it to buy sweets,” she explained.

“When I returned and gave him the change, he told me it was wrong. He said, ‘If you are sent to buy something, return the change. If the sender gives it to you, then it’s yours. Never take what doesn’t belong to you.’”

This simple but powerful lesson, she said, shaped their character and reinforced the value of honesty, a principle Buhari upheld throughout his public and private life.

Buhari’s Last Words to His Daughter

Nana also recalled her final meeting with her father in London.

“After he got better, I told him I was returning to Nigeria. He asked, ‘Where are you going?’ and when I said Nigeria, he replied, ‘Greet Nigerians.’”

According to her, this gesture reflected the love and deep connection the former president had with Nigerians until his last days.

“He loved Nigerians. He wanted the best for them, even if they didn’t always understand his methods,” she added.

“He Was Patient and Tolerant”

Both daughters described Buhari as a peaceful and disciplined father, one who avoided confrontation and preferred silence over retaliation.

“Dad doesn’t like noise. You can’t insult him and expect retaliation. He might keep an eye on you, but he won’t fight back,” Nana said.

They described him as a tolerant family man who, despite holding one of the most powerful positions in Africa, maintained strong family bonds and encouraged his children to pursue education, prayer, and service to humanity.

A Nation in Mourning

TJ News Nigeria learnt that Nigerians across political, religious, and ethnic divides have continued to mourn the former leader, praising him for his dedication to the country and his disciplined lifestyle.

Tributes have poured in from world leaders, prominent politicians, and civil society groups, highlighting Buhari’s legacy in governance, anti-corruption, and military service.

The late president is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, and as military Head of State between 1984 and 1985.

Reactions Across Nigeria

On social media, the daughters’ remarks have triggered mixed reactions. While many praised their humility and openness, others reignited debates over Buhari’s policies and leadership style.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote:

“Forgiveness is important. Whether you supported Buhari or not, these girls are reminding us of the human side of leadership.”

Another user commented:

“It’s touching that they came out to speak. It helps humanize the name Buhari after all the political noise.”

Final Farewell

As Nigeria prepares for the final rites and burial ceremonies, the words of his daughters have struck a chord with many citizens.

“He disciplined us to study, pray, and do things that made us happy,” Hanan said. “We’re proud of him.”

The late President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his simplicity, integrity, and deep connection to his family and country.
