ABUJA — A civil servant working with the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) has been arrested by the police in connection with alleged document leaks exposing large-scale land allocations linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

TJ News Nigeria learnt that the suspect, identified as Mairiga Hassan Shaharu, was picked up on Tuesday by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force. Shaharu, a staff member of AGIS’ Fresh Applications Unit, was arrested amid an ongoing investigation into leaked documents showing alleged unlawful land allocations to Mr Wike’s children.

As of Wednesday morning, Shaharu’s whereabouts remained unknown, raising concerns among colleagues and family members about his safety and well-being.

Arrest Triggers Concern Amidst Leak Probe

A police spokesperson confirmed awareness of the arrest but declined to provide details, promising to respond after further verification.

Shaharu’s unit at AGIS handles new applications and processes land records for approval and registration across the Federal Capital Territory. According to multiple sources, he is believed to be innocent and had no involvement in the dissemination of the leaked documents currently being reported by Peoples Gazette.

One AGIS official said, “They’re targeting the wrong people. He’s not responsible for the leak. This shows a lack of proper investigation and desperation to silence internal staff.”

Wike Allegedly Becomes Unsettled Over Fallout

Following the reports, multiple insiders within the Ministry of the FCT revealed that the minister, Nyesom Wike, has allegedly shown signs of distress. According to the officials, Mr Wike has reportedly increased his alcohol consumption and has displayed erratic behavior in response to the media exposé.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that the allegations against Wike relate to over 3,800 hectares of land—estimated at $6.45 billion in market value—allegedly allocated to his two sons, Jordan (25) and Joaquin (23). The land documents, reportedly obtained from within the minister’s office, form the basis of a multi-part investigation published by Peoples Gazette on June 26 and July 1.

An official familiar with the situation told The Gazette, “The minister is confused and acting in panic. He’s been cursing everyone around him, including his wife.”

Mr Wike’s spouse, Justice Eberechi Suzette Nyesom-Wike, currently serves on Nigeria’s federal appellate bench.

Public Reaction and Political Implications

The reports have triggered national outrage, with widespread calls for a full investigation into the alleged misuse of public office for personal enrichment. Several groups—many of them unregistered—have attempted to defend the minister publicly, describing the reports as politically motivated attacks.

Despite mounting pressure, Mr Wike has not publicly addressed the arrest of Mr Shaharu, and no official statement has been issued by the FCT Ministry regarding the land allocation allegations.

As of press time, efforts to obtain a response from the Minister’s media office were unsuccessful.

Background: Controversial Land Allocations

The series by Peoples Gazette accuses Mr Wike of bypassing due process to allocate strategic parcels of land within Abuja to his children. These allocations, if confirmed, would represent one of the most controversial land deals involving a serving FCT Minister in recent history.

Legal experts have said that if the documents are verified, they could raise serious ethical and administrative concerns under Nigeria’s civil service and public procurement regulations.

What you should know

As investigations continue, the arrest of Mr Shaharu has intensified public concern over the alleged clampdown on whistleblowers within AGIS. The case adds to the growing scrutiny on Mr Wike’s tenure as FCT Minister, particularly over land-related governance and transparency.

TJ News Nigeria will continue monitoring developments as more details emerge from the ongoing probe.
