Background: JTB’s Role in Uniform Tax Policies
The Joint Tax Board (JTB) is the regulatory body responsible for harmonizing and coordinating tax administration in Nigeria. It also sets uniform rates and guidelines for fees related to driver’s licenses, number plates, and other vehicle registration services in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and state governments.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that this decision to raise the cost is linked to adjustments for inflation, administrative overhead, and infrastructure upgrades in licensing and road safety systems.
Public Reaction and Concerns
The announcement has sparked reactions across social media and transport unions. Many Nigerians expressed concerns about the timing of the increase, citing the current economic challenges, subsidy removal effects, and rising cost of living.
An Abuja-based commercial driver, Musa Garba, told TJ News Nigeria:
“The government should help us, not punish us. We are already paying too much for fuel and vehicle maintenance. Increasing license fees now is adding more hardship.”

Others questioned the transparency of how the funds collected from licensing are used, urging relevant authorities to provide detailed breakdowns of revenue allocation.
Number Plate Costs Also Affected
Although the JTB is yet to release the full breakdown of new number plate charges, insiders within the Federal Road Safety Corps hinted that vehicle number plates could now attract rates ranging from ₦25,000 to ₦50,000, depending on vehicle category and state-specific administrative fees.
Motorcycle and tricycle plates are also expected to reflect marginal increases, though no official figures have been released yet.
What Nigerians Should Know
TJ News Nigeria learned that the new pricing regime applies to:
-
New license applications
-
Renewals of expired licenses
-
Conversion of temporary to permanent licenses
-
Commercial and private vehicles, including tricycles and motorcycles
All motorists are advised to visit approved FRSC licensing centers and state Motor Vehicle Administration Agencies (MVAA) for processing under the new fee structure.
