A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reportedly been stripped naked and brutally assaulted by operatives of a local vigilante outfit known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi (popularly called Agunechemba Vigilante Group) in Anambra State.
The victim, identified as Jennifer Edema Elohor, was said to have been attacked in July 2025 during a raid on a corps members’ lodge. A disturbing video of the incident surfaced on social media on Monday, showing armed vigilante operatives beating and humiliating the corps member while hurling abusive words.
TJ News Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred on July 23, 2025, when members of the vigilante group stormed the lodge, accusing corps members of engaging in internet fraud, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo.” Despite the victims’ immediate display of their NYSC uniforms and identity cards, the operatives reportedly assaulted them.
Disturbing Video Sparks Outrage
The footage, which has since gone viral, shows the female corps member being forcibly stripped and beaten by men wielding rifles. Other corps members were also subjected to intimidation, threats, and degrading treatment.
Human rights advocates have described the attack as both “barbaric” and “a gross violation of the dignity of the victims.”
Haven360 Foundation Reacts
In a statement issued after the video surfaced, Haven360 Foundation, a rights advocacy organisation, strongly condemned the attack and called for urgent government intervention.
The foundation noted:
- The assault occurred on July 23, 2025, at the corps lodge in Anambra.
- The vigilante group wrongfully profiled corps members as cybercriminals.
- Victims, particularly Jennifer Edema Elohor, were subjected to inhumane, degrading, and sexually abusive treatment.
“The assault was particularly egregious in the case of Jennifer Edema Elohor, who was beaten, stripped naked, and left covered in blood,” the statement read.
The group further urged the Anambra State Government to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators, while calling on the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corps Directorate to ensure justice and provide compensation to the victims.
Calls for Accountability
Civil society organisations and online commentators have demanded accountability for the vigilante operatives involved. Many questioned why corps members, who are serving the nation under a federal mandate, should be subjected to such humiliation.
Legal experts also pointed out that the actions captured in the viral video violate multiple provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights conventions to which the country is a signatory.
NYSC, Government Response Awaited
As of the time of filing this report, the NYSC management and the Anambra State Government are yet to issue official statements on the incident. However, pressure is mounting for both federal and state authorities to address the matter and prevent future occurrences.
Security analysts have also raised concerns about the activities of non-state security outfits across Nigeria, warning that the absence of proper oversight could lead to repeated abuses against citizens.
Key Takeaway
The assault on corps member Jennifer Edema Elohor by the Anambra vigilante group has sparked nationwide outrage, with rights groups demanding justice, accountability, and stronger protection for NYSC members across the country.
