Female Food Seller Lynched to Death over Alleged Blasphemy in Niger State

A female food vendor, identified only as Ammaye, has been lynched by an angry mob in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

The incident reportedly occurred at Kasuwan Garba, a popular community market in the council area, on Saturday.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that the woman, who was well-known in the community for selling food, had a verbal altercation with a young man said to be her nephew in a nearby village, Igwama.

How the Allegation Escalated

Eyewitnesses said the young man allegedly teased his aunt, stating he wanted to marry her “to fulfil the Sunnah,” a statement that reportedly led the woman to make remarks some locals deemed offensive.

Residents claim that the exchange of words quickly sparked outrage among members of the community, prompting elders to intervene.

The case was subsequently reported to the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where the woman was summoned for questioning. Sources said she repeated her earlier comments during interrogation, which further angered those present.

Security Intervention and Mob Attack

Authorities revealed that the District Head handed Ammaye over to security operatives for further investigation. However, reports indicate that a crowd of enraged youths demanded her immediate execution.

Security personnel attempted to safeguard the woman and transport her to safety, but the mob overpowered them. She was stoned to death at the scene.

Local Government Confirms Incident

Confirming the attack, Abbas Adamu, Chairman of Mariga Local Government, said law enforcement has restored calm to the community.

“Security operatives have contained the situation, and normalcy has returned,” Adamu said.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over mob justice and religious tensions in some parts of Nigeria, where allegations of blasphemy have historically led to violent confrontations.

Context: Blasphemy-Related Violence in Nigeria

Nigeria has witnessed several mob-related killings over alleged blasphemy in recent years, raising calls for stronger enforcement of the rule of law.

Human rights organizations and security experts have repeatedly urged communities to report grievances to appropriate authorities rather than resorting to mob action.

According to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, every individual has a right to life and fair hearing, regardless of religious or cultural beliefs.
