Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly given a clear condition before accepting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.

TJ News Nigeria reports that the ex-president insists that both former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, must return to the PDP. In addition, Jonathan is said to have demanded the expulsion of the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from the party.

According to political insiders, Jonathan believes the PDP can only stand a strong chance in the 2027 polls if the party unites its biggest political heavyweights. This would mean reconciling with Atiku and Obi, who both left the party in past years over unresolved internal disputes.

Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP’s presidential flagbearer in 2019 and 2023, has remained a key figure in Nigerian politics despite his recent electoral loss. Peter Obi, on the other hand, garnered massive youth support during the 2023 elections under the Labour Party. Jonathan reportedly sees their combined influence as vital to challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Why Wike Must Go

Jonathan’s demand for Wike’s removal stems from the deep division caused within the PDP after the 2023 general elections. Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, openly opposed the party’s presidential candidate in 2023 and formed the G5 faction, which significantly weakened PDP’s performance at the polls.

Impact on PDP’s 2027 Strategy
If Jonathan’s conditions are met, political analysts believe the PDP could consolidate power by bringing together experienced national figures with strong regional influence. However, the expulsion of Wike might spark fresh controversies, especially in Rivers State, where he remains a dominant political force.

As the 2027 general elections draw nearer, PDP leaders are expected to deliberate on Jonathan’s proposal in the coming months. Whether the party will agree to recall Atiku and Obi, while also parting ways with Wike, could define its political fate.
