Security Operatives Barred Lawmaker Despite Court Ruling Nullifying Suspension

Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has entered the National Assembly complex after initially being denied access by security operatives, despite a court ruling that declared her suspension unlawful.

TJ News Nigeria reports that the Kogi Central senator arrived at the gate of the National Assembly in a black SUV earlier today, intending to resume plenary duties following a recent Federal High Court judgment in her favour.

Barred Entry Despite Court Victory

Security officers at the main gate blocked her vehicle from entering the complex. Accompanying her at the time was rights activist Aisha Yesufu, who joined the senator in a show of solidarity. Both vehicles were turned back by security, citing her current suspension from the Senate.

The lawmaker, however, defied the obstruction. In a dramatic turn, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stepped out of her vehicle and began walking into the premises on foot, surrounded by supporters.

Background: Suspension and Legal Challenge

Senator Natasha was placed on a six-month suspension by the Senate earlier this year. However, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja recently ruled the suspension as “unlawful, unconstitutional, and excessive,” paving the way for her resumption.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that the senator had earlier written to the Senate President notifying him of her intention to resume plenary in line with the court’s judgment.

Despite this, the National Assembly’s security apparatus initially refused to comply, leading to public outcry and legal observers questioning the enforcement of judicial orders within Nigeria’s legislative institutions.

A short video clip circulating online shows Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan being flanked by supporters, some chanting solidarity slogans as she made her way into the complex on foot. The presence of activist Aisha Yesufu further heightened public attention around the event, drawing reactions on social media.

TJ News Nigeria learnt that the incident has sparked renewed debate on legislative overreach and the enforcement of court rulings concerning public office holders.
