How to Get a Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Nigeria – Updated

According to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), getting a Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Nigeria is a straightforward and free process. In many cases, your TIN is automatically generated once you register your personal or business details through official government channels.

Applicants are strongly advised not to pay unofficial agents or use shortcuts. The process is completely free when done through the approved methods.


🔹 What is a TIN?

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number issued by the Nigerian tax authorities to individuals and organizations for tax purposes. It is used for identification, compliance, and reporting with tax laws.


Tax Identification Number (TIN)  Registration Methods

🔸 For Individuals

You can obtain your TIN in three official ways:


1. Online Registration

You can register online through the Joint Tax Board (JTB) portal:

Steps:

  • Go to the TIN registration portal: https://tin.jtb.gov.ng
  • Click on “Register for TIN (Individual)”
  • Fill in the required details:
    • NIN (National Identification Number) or BVN (Bank Verification Number)
    • Your full name and date of birth
    • Mobile number and email address
  • Submit the form
  • Your TIN will be generated and sent to you via SMS or email

2. Physical Registration (Walk-In)

You can also register by visiting the nearest FIRS or State IRS office.

Required Documents:

  • Accurate Date of Birth
  • Bank Verification Number (BVN)
  • Registered Phone Number
  • Previous TIN (if applicable)

The staff will assist you in completing the form, and your TIN will be processed on-site.


3. Through an Accredited Tax Professional

You may engage the services of a licensed tax consultant or agent authorized by the FIRS. They will handle the application on your behalf. Ensure the agent is registered and recognized by tax authorities to avoid fraud.


🔸 For Businesses or Corporate Entities

To get a TIN for a business in Nigeria, follow these steps:


1. Register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)

Before applying for a TIN, your business must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. Upon successful registration, you will receive:

  • CAC Certificate of Incorporation
  • Company Registration Number (RC Number)

2. Apply for TIN via FIRS or JTB
