Abuja — Popular Nigerian human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has stirred controversy after publicly condemning the late CSP Ekene Nwosu, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Anti-Robbery Squad in Akwa Ibom State Police Command, describing him as a “devil” and a “rogue police officer” with no respect for human rights or the rule of law.
The lawyer’s comments came on Saturday, May 31, via social media, following widespread reactions to the death of CSP Nwosu, who reportedly died in Ekiti State. While some mourned his passing, others celebrated due to the alleged abuses committed during his tenure.

Effiong’s Stinging Criticism
Inibehe Effiong said he had personally confronted CSP Nwosu and described him as “power drunk” and “callous,” recounting numerous cases where Nwosu violated the rights of innocent citizens in Akwa Ibom State.
“Ekene is a perfect example of a rogue police officer. He subjected innocent people to the most barbaric forms of dehumanization. He had no respect for lawyers, human rights, and held the judiciary in contempt,” Effiong wrote.

Effiong further revealed that the courts had found Nwosu culpable in several human rights violation cases, some of which were handled by Effiong’s law firm in Uyo.

Allegations of Political Backing

The human rights lawyer accused Nwosu of wielding excessive power and enjoying protection from successive Commissioners of Police due to his role as an enforcer for corrupt politicians in the state.
“Ekene had so much power in the state. Successive Commissioners of Police failed to checkmate him, partly because he was a mercenary for oppressive and corrupt politicians in Akwa Ibom,” Effiong stated.
Effiong also disclosed that Nwosu reportedly celebrated the death of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, who had transferred him out of Akwa Ibom to Ekiti State — where he later died.
Reflections on Legacy
While acknowledging that death is inevitable for all mortals, Effiong urged rogue officers to reflect on their legacy.

“It is true that every mortal will taste death, but we should always reflect on what we will be remembered for. For Ekene, those who remember him for his many evil deeds are within their right,” he concluded.
Public Reaction Divided
Since the news of CSP Nwosu’s death, reactions on social media have been mixed — with some celebrating the demise of a feared officer, while others condemned the public display of joy over a death.
