The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 57 distinguished legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The announcement was made following the committee’s 169th plenary session held in Abuja under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

According to an official statement, 56 of the appointees were selected under the advocate category, while one academic was elevated based on scholarly contributions to the legal profession.

Among the new appointees are only two womenMrs Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, who chairs the Nigerian Bar Association’s 2024 Annual General Conference Planning Committee, and Mrs Chinyere Ekene Moneme. Their inclusion highlights the continuing need for gender balance at the highest levels of the legal profession.

Also making the list are notable figures including Ikechukwu Uwanna, Attorney General of Abia State and former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch; Labaran Magaji, immediate past Attorney General of Nasarawa State and current Secretary to the State Government; and Oluwole Jimi-Bada, the Attorney General of Osun State.

In the academic category, the sole honoree is Professor Chima Ubanyionwu, recognized for his significant contributions to legal education and scholarship.

The LPPC emphasized that the SAN rank is conferred as a mark of professional excellence, reserved for legal practitioners who have exhibited exceptional distinction either in court advocacy or academic contributions.

“The rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria is conferred as a mark of professional excellence upon legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction either as advocates in the courts or as academics contributing significantly to the development of legal scholarship,” the Committee stated.

The LPPC also disclosed that it reviewed three petitions against certain applicants during the session. After thorough evaluation, all petitions were found to lack merit and were dismissed.

Furthermore, all shortlisted SAN appointees are required to attend and complete the Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme in compliance with Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) directives.

The swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 SAN appointees is scheduled to hold on Monday, September 29, 2025.
