Abuja, Nigeria – The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has publicly apologized for his recent verbal attacks on the Federal High Court and Justice Binta Nyako.

The apology was delivered through his new legal counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, who expressed regret for Kanu’s actions, particularly his remarks against the Federal Government’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, and his own former legal team.

Kanu Expresses Regret Over Court Outbursts

During a court session on Friday before Justice James Omotosho, Agabi acknowledged that Kanu had been frustrated and angry for a long time, leading to unjustified comments against the judiciary and legal representatives.

“My client has been in detention for years, and the prolonged nature of this trial has taken a toll on him. However, his recent statements against Justice Binta Nyako, his legal team, and the prosecution were regrettable. He has asked me to convey his sincere apologies,” Agabi said.

The senior lawyer, a former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, further appealed for understanding, emphasizing that “mistakes are inevitable, and the focus should be on reconciliation rather than destruction.”

Prosecution and Court Respond to Apology

The Federal Government’s lead counsel, Awomolo, accepted the apology, stating that while the case has generated tension, his legal team remains committed to ensuring an expeditious hearing. He also acknowledged the emotional burden Kanu has carried throughout the trial.

Justice Omotosho also responded sympathetically, noting that Kanu’s prolonged legal battle may have contributed to his frustration.

“When he was first arraigned in 2015, he was 47 years old. Now he is 57 and still uncertain about his fate. This prolonged process can make anyone act out of character,” Justice Omotosho remarked.

What This Means for the Case

With this new development, legal analysts believe that Kanu’s apology could help de-escalate tensions surrounding his trial. His legal team hopes this gesture will encourage a fair and speedy resolution of the case, which has been ongoing for nearly a decade.

Meanwhile, IPOB supporters and human rights organizations continue to call for justice and due process, urging the Nigerian government to ensure Kanu’s trial adheres to constitutional principles.
