Peter Obi Reveals Last Message Buhari Gave Him During Presidential Campaign

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has revealed a personal message shared with him by the late former President Muhammadu Buhari during the buildup to the last general election.
TJ News Nigeria reports that Obi disclosed this after visiting Buhari’s family in Daura, Katsina State, on Wednesday, to offer his condolences following the former president’s death at age 82.
“Please Care for the Poor Nigerians” — Buhari’s Message to Obi
Speaking with reporters shortly after the condolence visit, Obi recounted a significant moment during his 2023 presidential campaign when he consulted Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning,” Obi said.
“And I remember his words clearly: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That I can still remember. And I believe he did his best within his capacity.”
Background: Obi Consulted Buhari Before 2023 Elections
Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential race behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, had visited Buhari—then Nigeria’s sitting President—to formally inform him of his intention to run for office.

The former Anambra State Governor said the conversation left a lasting impression on him, especially Buhari’s emphasis on poverty alleviation as a key national concern.
Buhari’s Death and Burial in Daura
TJ News Nigeria gathered that Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a private hospital in London, United Kingdom. He was aged 82.
The late president was buried in Daura on Tuesday, July 15, following Islamic rites. The funeral prayer, led by Imam Hassan Yusuf, drew several high-ranking dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, and Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine of Niger Republic.

Born in Katsina State, Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1983 and 1985, and later as the country’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
