The Supreme Court of Nigeria will today, July 10, deliver its much-anticipated verdict on the legal dispute surrounding the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State.
The case, which is scheduled for judgment at 9 a.m., involves an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the declaration of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected governor.

TJ News Nigeria gathered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Okpebholo the winner of the poll held in 2024. However, dissatisfied with the outcome, Ighodalo and the PDP filed a petition first at the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, then at the Court of Appeal, both of which dismissed their claims.
The PDP then escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, Nigeria’s apex judicial body with final authority on electoral disputes.
A five-member panel of Justices, chaired by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal, heard arguments from all parties in June and reserved judgment. At the conclusion of the hearing, the panel informed all legal representatives that the date for delivering judgment would be communicated—now set for today.

The Supreme Court’s ruling is final and binding, meaning there will be no further legal recourse for either party.
The outcome is expected to have significant political implications for both the ruling APC and the opposition PDP in Edo State, especially as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.
