The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has initiated the process of registering the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) as a political party in Nigeria, following the receipt of its application earlier this month.

TJ News Nigeria reports that INEC confirmed this development in an official communication dated June 27, 2025, signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

“The Commission is processing your application in line with the provision of Part 1, clause 2(ii) of our Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022,” the letter read.

The acknowledgment was sent to ADA’s Protem National Chairman, whose name was not publicly disclosed, marking the first formal correspondence between the electoral commission and the party’s promoters.

Over 100 Groups Seeking Party Registration

INEC’s confirmation comes amid an ongoing wave of political mobilisation, with the commission revealing it has received 110 applications from groups seeking to register new political parties.

According to INEC, these requests are currently undergoing scrutiny in line with Nigeria’s Electoral Act and its Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties (2022).

INEC maintains that before any association is granted full party status, it must fulfill all requirements — including establishing functional offices across the country, meeting diversity benchmarks, and complying with transparency and financial reporting obligations.

ADA Seen as Strategic Opposition Platform

TJ News Nigeria learnt that the All Democratic Alliance is being floated by key political stakeholders and civil society actors as part of a broader opposition coalition aimed at challenging the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources familiar with the development indicate that ADA may serve as a platform for aggrieved politicians and parties seeking to unite the opposition in a bid to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from securing a second term.

“It is part of a coordinated strategy. ADA is being positioned as a central opposition party to rally disenchanted voices across the country,” a political strategist told TJ News Nigeria on condition of anonymity.

While no formal declaration has been made by prominent opposition leaders, analysts say movements like ADA could become instruments of coalition-building in the months ahead.

Legal Framework and Timeline

Under Nigerian law, political associations seeking registration must submit their applications at least 12 months before any general election and are required to satisfy a number of stringent criteria.

These include:

  • Demonstrating national spread in membership and organisational structure.
  • Maintaining functional offices in at least two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states.
  • Meeting internal democracy requirements for leadership selection.
  • Providing audited financial reports and full disclosure of funding sources.

If ADA passes all INEC checks, it may be granted full party status before the end of 2025 — in time to participate in the pre-election campaigns and local government elections across several states in 2026.

Political Implications

Analysts say the emergence of new parties like ADA could reshape the opposition landscape, especially if existing parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and NNPP fail to form a united front.

ADA’s formation, if successful, may attract high-profile defectors and serve as a vehicle for fresh candidates, particularly younger politicians and technocrats who have expressed frustration with traditional political structures.

However, some observers have cautioned that proliferation of parties without clear ideologies or grassroots base may end up splitting the opposition vote, inadvertently benefiting the ruling party.

TJ News Nigeria will continue to monitor INEC’s decision-making process and provide updates on ADA’s registration status, coalition negotiations, and political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
