UK Opens Applications for 2025 Chevening Scholarships: Nigerians Encouraged to Apply Before October 7

The United Kingdom has officially opened applications for the 2025/2026 Chevening Scholarships, offering a fully funded opportunity for exceptional individuals across the globe, including Nigeria, to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK.

Applications opened on Tuesday, August 5, and will close on Monday, October 7, 2025.

TJ News Nigeria reports that the Chevening programme, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, targets candidates with strong academic backgrounds, proven leadership potential, and a demonstrated commitment to driving positive change in their home countries.

What is the Chevening Scholarship?

  • A UK government global scholarship programme launched in 1983
  • Offers fully funded one-year master’s degrees at any UK university
  • Open to individuals from over 160 countries and territories
  • More than 60,000 professionals have benefited so far

According to the British High Commission in Abuja, this year’s application window presents another unique chance for talented Nigerians to become part of a prestigious global alumni network.

UK Officials Urge Nigerians to Apply

Emma Hennessey, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK FCDO, described Chevening as “highly competitive,” selecting “only the most outstanding candidates from across the world.”

“Chevening Alumni use their world-class education, global networks, and confidence gained in the UK to create meaningful, lasting change when they return home,” she said.

She advised that successful candidates must clearly demonstrate key competencies such as leadership, influence, and networking skills.

“If you’re not quite there yet, take the time to build the experience that will make your application competitive,” she added.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, encouraged ambitious Nigerians to seize the opportunity.

“Chevening is more than a scholarship — it is a gateway to a global network of leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” he said.

He added that the programme targets individuals aiming to shape public policy, start businesses, or tackle pressing global issues.
