Technical glitches discovered in English, Maths, Biology and Economics papers

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has admitted that technical issues affected the accuracy of results released for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

The Council revealed that the error was discovered during an internal post-result audit, prompting an urgent review and temporary suspension of access to the results portal.

TJ News Nigeria reports that WAEC introduced a new innovation known as paper serialization in this year’s exam — an anti-malpractice measure meant to strengthen assessment integrity. The process was implemented in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics, but later caused technical bugs in the result release system.

Access to Results Temporarily Suspended

In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Department on Thursday, August 7, 2025, WAEC confirmed that the glitches led to “incorrect results” for some candidates. As a result, the council has temporarily restricted access to the WASSCE 2025 results on its official checker portal.

WAEC 2025: Exam Board Blames Bugs for Massive Failure, Tells Students to Recheck Results Friday

“We sincerely regret the technical issues discovered… The Council has decided to urgently review and correct the technical glitches that led to the situation,” the statement read.

WAEC advised all students — especially those who had already checked their results — to recheck them after 24 hours, starting Friday, August 8, 2025.

Affected Subjects and Transparency Commitment

The paper serialization process was carried out in:

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Biology
  • Economics

While the method aligns with global best practices in assessment, WAEC noted that “some technical bugs” affected the results uploaded to the public platform.

The Council said it is reviewing the situation “with transparency and urgency” and promised to resolve the issue within 24 hours.

Public Reaction and Apologies

The release has sparked widespread reactions, with many candidates expressing confusion and frustration over initially poor results. The Council offered a public apology to all affected students, parents, and institutions.

“We extend our deep and sincere apologies to all affected candidates and the general public. We appreciate their patience and understanding,” WAEC stated.

Candidates who previously viewed their results are strongly advised to recheck by Friday for corrected information.

WAEC Assures Stakeholders of Integrity

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding fairness, excellence, and transparency in all its assessments.

“Thank you for always counting on our integrity and reposing confidence in us to render quality service to the Nigerian child,” the statement concluded.

The press release was signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, Yaba Lagos.
